More People Care About You Than You Know

family photo

Sometimes something bad has to happen for you to realize how many people care about you.  I just found that out and I am overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and encouragement I have received from people who care about me.

I bet you have many more people who care about you than you know as well. (I just hope you don’t have to experience something bad to discover it.)

After my radio show last Wednesday I was told that corporate was looking at saving money and decided the best way to do that was to lay me off. For the past 5 years I have consistently had the highest ratings on the station, so I was told repeatedly it was not about my performance. My general manager was very kind in telling me how much she appreciated my show and my work.

This sometimes happens in radio. Does it stink and hurt? Yeah, but I get it. I’ve been in the business for 20 years now. It’s actually been great to me. I’ve had more fun and made more money at it than anything else I’ve done in my life. And it’s not over, yet. This is just a temporary setback. I’ve already had people express interest in my show and I’m excited about what might come next.

I hope this doesn’t come off as humble bragging but I really want to thank everyone publicly who reached out to me and share with you why I feel so good on the heels of losing my radio show. I sincerely thank you for reaching out and lifting me up. I can’t express in words how much each of your comments mean to me.

I’m really energized about how I can use this time to ramp up my Personal Development business. I love speaking to organizations, colleges, high schools and churches on the power of purpose and how it can change your life and work.

I love coaching people to help them find and pursue their Passionate Purpose.

I’m starting to write my second book and creating online courses.

Just this week I’ve had three new speaking engagements booked and two new coaching clients.

What I’m even more excited about and what blew me away was the response I received after I posted on my Facebook page that my show was taken off the air. Kind words and messages came flooding in from friends, family, and listeners of my show.

You told me how my book has changed your life. (That makes me feel incredible.)

You asked if I could coach you.

You told me how you felt like I was your friend because of how I related to you on the radio everyday. (That’s the best compliment I could ever get about my show. Every time I turn on the microphone I picture myself talking to a friend. When you feel that, I’ve done my job.)

You told me how you made a point to tune into my show everyday because I entertained you, informed you and made you feel something.

You praised me for being so prepared for every show. (That one really got me because I pride myself on reading and being over-prepared each day.)

You asked me to send you information on my speaking so you can help book me to present at your company’s convention.

You prayed for me. One of you even called me up and said a prayer for me right on the spot.

Awesome.
Overwhelming.
Humbling.

I had no idea how many people cared about me and wanted the best for me. It has lifted me up as I’ve pondered what’s next.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I am at peace with the idea that better things are coming. I know I’m here for a purpose and God has plans for me.

It’s time for me to keep practicing what I preach. I know my Passionate Purpose is to help as many other people and organizations find their Passionate Purpose as possible so they can live out the extraordinary lives of their dreams.

That’s exactly what I’m going to do.

What are you going to do?

Thanks so much for caring about me. Let me know what I can do to help you.

Let’s GO!

If It Was Easy, Everyone Would Do It

easy

Finding and pursuing your Passionate Purpose seems like a lot of work. (And I still haven’t watched all of Shark Week that I DVRd.) It is a lot of work. It’s a lot easier to coast through days, weeks, months, and years, never putting out the effort to live that extraordinary life.

But that’s not what you want. You want something different. You are all in on pursuing your Passionate Purpose. You are going to capitalize on that by increasing your income to the point you can change your family tree, give to others, live where you want, travel where and when you want, do what you want, and be financially free.

So when you get tired, or down, or you question yourself just remember, yes, all the hard work is worth it. If you do it right, you will also enjoy the entire journey.

I know it can be overwhelming to imagine that you are going to become the person who can do everything you must do to achieve all your dreams.

It will take time.

It will take effort.

It won’t go in a straight line.

You will hit walls.

But if you continually think about what you want and who you want to be, make a commitment to it, and consistently take action every day, you will succeed…

…and it will be worth it.

Get moving on something that will start you on the path to finding and pursuing your Passionate Purpose. After all, the years will go by either way. Do you want to look back twenty years from now and say I just kept making a living, or do you want to look back and say that was when I decided to start earning an extraordinary life?

My hope for you is that you get started right now on your Passionate Purpose. What are you waiting for?

Go.

Now.

Why are you still sitting there? GO!

Who Else Wants to Get More Done in Less Time?

Do-Less-Achieve-More

You are working harder than ever. From the second the alarm clock goes off until your head hits the pillow at night you are working. It’s slowly killing you and you’re starting to notice that all that work isn’t doing as much as you thought it would.

It’s time to spend less time working to do more.

Ok, get the guys in the white coats. Greg’s really lost it this time.

Nope, never been more sane. I’ve noticed that when I’m trying to put out all the fires and be all things to all people, I let other people determine my priorities. You know what happens then? My most important tasks don’t get done.

When I decide my top three priorities and take them one at a time until they’re done, I get more important things done. That helps everyone more.

Here’s how you do it, depending on if you’re self-employed or you’re an employee.

Self-employed:

1) Ask yourself: What is the most important thing that if you got it done today would make the biggest difference to your business?

2) Do that until it’s done. I know sometimes “things come up.” But you need to schedule time for your most important activities or something will always “come up.” At the minimum, work on this task for one hour. Then take a break for emails, phone calls, fires, etc. Then repeat the process.

3) Repeat steps one and two for your three priorities until you’re done for the day.

4) If time remains, do the next thing on your list.

5) Celebrate a great day! Go for a walk with your spouse. Eat some boiled peanuts and watch a martial arts movie. (Wait, that’s just what I like to do. Sorry.)

If you’re an employee:

1) Meet with your boss and ask him/her and work out what the companies goals are for you – short and long term. What does he expect from you? What are the top three most important things he expects you to get done?

You might think you know this already. Hey, you might. But, you also might be surprised just how different your ideas of what is important are from what your boss thinks.

2) Focus 80% of your time on those top three things your boss wants done. Do this in one-hour increments. Tell everyone, no interruptions during that time. Set a timer. You will be shocked what this type of focus will do.

3) As you show your boss how much important work you’re getting done, see if he will delegate some of your less important work to someone else. (You will be surprised how often the answer will be yes.)

4) Use the other 20% of your time to do the less important but necessary tasks of your job.

5) Win the office fantasy football pool. Whoo hoo! (Whoops, sorry, that’s my stuff again.)

Let me know how this works!

Your Best Life

palm

Here’s your mission tonight, if you choose to accept it. Spend one half hour of your limited time on this big, blue marble hurtling through space writing down what your best life would look like. The questions below are to help guide you through this.

Done correctly, this is an extremely uplifting exercise. Just organizing and prioritizing your best life can increase your happiness, optimism, and belief that you can accomplish your goals.

I want my life to be so awesome that only Morgan Freeman could narrate it.

When you answer these questions, don’t edit yourself – or tell yourself “no” – or “you’re being unrealistic.” This is Fantasyland time. No limits. Reality will come later. We’re looking for your best life.

We want the answers to come from your gut. Write as quickly as you can the first answers that pop in your head. Listen to that quiet voice inside you. Let it get loud!

What would you do if it were impossible to fail?

What would your career be?

What would your marriage be like?

What would your income be?

How much free time would you have?

Where would you live?

How many people could you help?

What type of relationships would you have with your children?

What would your relationship be with God?

Where would you travel for vacations?

How many vacations would you take each year?

What would you have crossed off your bucket list?

How much would you give away to charity each year?

What would your spiritual life be like?

Where would you volunteer?

How much would you weigh?

What would your physical health be?

Would you play an instrument, speak a foreign language, or know how to dance?

What groups would you belong to?

These are just some questions to get you started. What questions do you need to ask yourself to get to your best life?

When’s The Last Time You Defined Your Purpose?

purpose

What do you mean when you use the word “purpose”? Is it your reason for being? Is it why you do that thing you do? Is it one thing that guides everything else? Is it one thing or many? Is it permanent or does it change over time?

Purpose – pur·pose: noun /ˈpərpəs/

  1. The reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.

Your definition of purpose for your life will have an enormous impact on the choices you make, the actions you take, and the goals you accomplish.

Just taking the time to define and determine your purpose will irrevocably change your life. Similarly, the default position of never figuring any of this out will also change your course.

Cat: Where are you going?

Alice: Which way should I go?

Cat: That depends on where you are going.

Alice: I don’t know.

Cat: Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.

–Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

For me, purpose means many things. At the macro level it is the reason I was created. It is the prism I use to view everything else I do. If my actions aren’t in line with my ultimate purpose, then why am I doing it?

Should I be doing it?

I believe I have more than one purpose and that those purposes can change over time. At the micro level, I have a purpose in my personal relationships, in my professional life, and in my physical and spiritual lives.

Each one of those purposes changes over time. My purpose in personal relationships is simple. It sounds corny, but I like corny. It is:

  • To treat every individual I come in contact with the way I would like to be treated
  • To look for the best in each person
  • To truly listen
  • To grow deep connections

Those purposes are slightly different if I’m working on a relationship with my wife, or my father, or my daughters, or a complete stranger. My relationship purpose has changed slightly from when I was a child, to a single adult, to a married man, to a father. It will change again one day when I become a grandfather.

Yes, I have an overarching purpose on relating to people that sustains me through all the changes, but the nuances are important. They help direct me in my daily decisions.

What is your purpose?

Easy Way to Wake Up Energized

excited

I’m not a morning person!

Very few of us are. My oldest daughter, Faith, definitely isn’t. Yet, she is the one who just reminded me of the easy way to wake up energized. Love where you’re going.

Faith is just about to turn 16. She tends to stay up a bit too late most nights by the time homework and getting ready for bed stuff is done. When we wake her up in the morning she is usually in full grump mode. It takes her a while to become her normal, happy self.

But this morning she got up on her own, came downstairs fully dressed, bright eyed and chipper.

What changed? Where she was going. And how she thought about where she was going.

Going somewhere you’re not excited about – school? Wake up in grump mode.

Going somewhere you are excited about – Starlight acting camp? Wake up energized!

Aren’t you motivated in the same way by what you love to do and look forward to?

Are you looking forward to where you’re going today? Tomorrow? If not, what can you do about that?

You can change where you’re going. You can change what happens where you’re going. You can change your mindset about where you’re going. You can control how you act and react when you get there.

You are in control. You get to choose.

Greg, it’s not that easy. I can’t just change everything today. I have responsibilities and bills and…it’s complicated.

I get you. You’re right. It’s not always easy. But, it’s always worth it. It’s never too late.

(Shameless plug alert!) That’s why I wrote a whole book on how to do this. Click here to buy my book, Go How to Find and Pursue Your Passionate Purpose, on Amazon. You can sample the book for free by requesting it on the right hand side of this page.

Action steps:

1) Honestly assess your excitement level of getting up in the morning on a scale of 1 to 10.

2) List the reasons you are, and are not, excited in the morning.

3) Brainstorm ways to change your mindset and your environment to increase your morning excitement level.

4) GO!

Questions for comment: When was the last time you woke up energized and looking forward to the day? What did you do to create that experience?
